KAS has arranged a trip to the College of Fine and Applied Arts. The Studio Art Students and the 8th grade art class enjoyed the exhibition of different art departments.

Week Without Walls (WWW)

Week Without Walls is a program offered in many international schools worldwide. It is designed to give students the experiences that will inspire them to become more internationally-minded and caring global citizens. A global citizen is someone who is aware of the wider world, cares about people and the environment, and takes action to make the world a better place. Students plan and work as teams, strengthening their teamwork for a common goal of greater good.

For Week Without Walls thirteen students from grade 5 to grade 12 visited Omdurman souq where, on day one, they rediscovered traditional medicines, interviewed traders and the ladies who weave baskets. On day two they visited the antique part of the souq and learnt much about the history of Sudan from early Nubian times throughout the colonial era. Students saw woodcarvers in action and talked to locals and traders about Omdurman and life in Sudan. Locals at the souq were excited to see the students and to share their knowledge. It was obvious that the locals are proud of their heritage and happy that the students wanted to learn about Sudan. On day three students made a video to share their experiences with other students and visitors to ��˴�Ƭ.

A Facebook post by Byron Román in 2018 challenged the world. He took a photo of a public area covered in trash, and then took another photo after he had finished cleaning it up. Then he issued a challenge to bored teenagers everywhere to do what he had done in their own countries, calling it the ‘#Trashtag Challenge’. For Week Without Walls we took him up on that challenge. We chose two sites to clean. One was located aside the school, and the other one was at a garden in a nearby neighborhood.

The first day we scouted where we were going to go to get a sense of where all the sites were. We also watched videos about how trash harms the environment, and how it also affects animals. The second day we cleaned the first site, the site beside the school. We cleaned the whole place step-by-step. People even stopped by and said we are doing really good for the neighborhood. There were so many obstacles in our way, such as the heat from the sun, but we stuck together to finish cleaning all of it. In the end we cleaned about 11 bags of trash, which is a lot!

The third day we went to a neighborhood garden that took thirty minutes to walk to. The trash in the garden was mostly bottle caps, but there was also plastic bags, straws, old clothes, cardboard boxes, etc. It took us about two and a half hours to gather up all the trash, which amounted to about three bags’ worth. During the cleanup we took before and after pictures that we could put on social media. The whole thing was a unique experience for us because we all stepped into the shoes of the people who cleanup ��˴�Ƭ’s trash.

The 8th Grade Ecology Trip to Uganda (2018/19)

The 8th grade students travelled to Uganda for their ecology and service learning trip, an event they had been planning and fundraising for since the beginning of the academic year. On this trip, the students spent seven days traveling around Uganda and experiencing its beautiful nature, astounding wildlife, and unique cultures. In Entebbe, we visited the Botanical Gardens and, after some Tarzan-style swinging, learned about the different plant and wildlife that call the gardens home. After this, we visited Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary. In the following days, the students continued to learn about wildlife at Mburo National Park as well as about the science of the equator. The highlight of the trip was Bwindi. The students visited a local orphanage to see some cultural dances, but the most rewarding aspect was the work they accomplished at the Batwa Empowerment Camp. Here they put their fundraised money to good use, building a new hut that will house two families. They worked hand-in-hand with the Batwa people and weren’t afraid to get a little, or a lot, dirty. The students got closer not only to the people of Uganda, but also to one another. This has been an amazing trip for all.

KAS students recently participated in a Model United Nations conference in Qatar with some of the top international school students from around the world. Throughout the three day conference, KAS students engaged in debate, diplomacy, and public speaking to help solve several complementary and historic global issues. The conference served as a good build up to our upcoming MUN conferences.
